Painted during this year's Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational.

On the day I had planned to head out to the other side of the island to try and paint the sea turtles, it rained. A relentless downpour all day, so my plan had to be scrapped. The next day, the forecast said it would be clear only in the morning, so I rushed out to Ho'okipa beach, and sure enough, a dozen honu were already settled in for some sunbathing. 

The great thing about these turtles is that once they settle in for a nap, they don't move - perfect models. I was able to set up in an open shade and paint them without rushing. More turtles came out of the water, and posed for me. I moved my easel a few times to get various angles, but essentially did this 12 x 24 painting in one shot. 

Turned out to be one of my favorites from the week!
