A Demo Isn't Enough! How About A Workshop?

So the cityscape demo in Berkeley went really well! I was relieved to see that lots of people came to see the demo - Thank you very much! - it was standing room only.

One can never tell if the room will be full or empty for something like this, so I was very glad that so many came out to see me do this thing. It also meant that the pressure was on!

But it went pretty smoothly, and I think I did a decent painting in about an hour and 45 minutes, talking the entire time.

I tried to cover a lot of ground, from materials to process, technique, philosophy... But with only a couple of hours, I can just touch upon each of the concepts, and there's just not enough time to delve deeper.

So for anyone interested in really digging deeper and learning about cityscape painting - my approach, anyway - I have two workshops coming up!

I'm excited about workshop and plan on coming to Michigan.
What should you do or work on to be best prepared for the workshop .
I'm pretty new at this !

Hi Fred, Welcome aboard! I think the best thing to do is just do lots of little studies. Fill sketchbooks with drawings from observation, and do small (9 x 12 is a good size) oil studies of anything and everything - could be as simple as an apple, or a landscape, or cars and buildings...Subject doesn't matter - just do lots so you can get used to basic color mixing and application.

Hi Terry,
I absolutely love your style and the openness with which you share your artistic process. I am a novice oil painter and love working with oils; I especially love colors and the magic of mixing pigments.
I read every word of your notes and have used them to guide my own painting exercises. The figurative paintings are a real challenge and I would love to see you post more about this process.
Would you ever consider doing workshops in Canada? I live near Toronto but would travel to the west coast, as well.
Again, thank you so much for taking the time to write your notes - they are so valuable and informative! Please continue to share!

Absolutely love your work! Your still life and figures, especially. Do you ever do workshops in SE? We have an active art scene in Atlanta and would love to have you come here for a workshop. Maybe come to Olmstead Plainaire in Spring ‘19.
