Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational 2019.

Standing Tall, is the largest piece I did during the 9 - day plein air event. In fact, I think it's the largest painting I've ever done en plein air. I usually only do small studies outside, so this was a bit of a challenge I set out for myself. 

I do plenty of larger format paintings in the studio, so I wasn't worried about being able to do it if I had enough time. Painting outside, of course, means limited time because the sun keeps moving (how inconvenient!). 

My solution - and I planned this - was to do it over two sessions. Unless there was rain, there was a very good chance that the light conditions would be very similar over two consecutive days, provided I set up at the same time of the day. 

The subject matter was also familiar because I painted these mountains in similar light conditions the previous two years. Of course I didn't want to do the same painting over and over so I fretted over how to approach it differently. I incorporated large foreground elements on this one, which made it an entirely new experience. 

I actually painted this from the same spot where I painted An Afternoon Lull,  but having learned from that experience, I waited till after the sprinklers had finished watering the lawn. Haha!~
