You may have noticed on social media that gouache has seen a resurgence
of popularity in recent years. Because of its versatility and
portability, it is no surprise that many artists are finding it an
ideal medium for sketching and studies. It is so much more
travel-friendly than oils, too.
But gouache can be a very difficult medium if you're unfamiliar with
its unique characteristics. For example, many painters find it
particularly frustrating to control value in this medium as it changes
significantly as the paint dries.
This workshop aims to demystify gouache. Learn to control it by first
understanding why it doesn't want to cooperate, and then exploiting
these quirks as strengths of the medium, rather than obstacles.
I'll be presenting these problems and solutions as 13 Things You Must
Do To Tame The Beast! and while we're at it, I hope to take years off
your learning curve!

The Franciscan Life Process Center is a fantastic facility in the
beautiful rural Michigan, and it is perfectly set up for workshops. It
has a great studio in which we can do the indoor portion of the
workshop, and we can stay right on the property to paint its acres of
terrific farmscape en plein air. The Center even has bedrooms you can
in which you can stay for a very reasonable rate, too. Like I said,
it's perfectly set up for workshops and retreats!
